Samara is the center of the Middle Volga region and the ninth largest city in the country. To meet the spiritual needs of the million people, the city has a large number of churches of different confessions and time periods. Unfortunately, many Orthodox parishes were lost during the years of abandonment of religion. At the moment, 6 churches of pre-revolutionary buildings have survived, which have been restored and are operating in our time.
Since the 90s of the XX century, Orthodoxy has received its revival in society. The construction of new churches began. Some of them were erected in memory of the lost. In new districts of the city, at the request of parishioners, new churches were erected. Modern objects preserve the traditions of Orthodox architecture and are not only a decoration of the city, but also spiritual and social centers.

Intercession Cathedral
The construction of the main Orthodox church in Samara dates back to 1861. The architecture of the object belongs to the Moscow style of temple architecture. The five domes and the entrance passing through the hipped bell tower are characteristic of the Russian tradition. The interiors can accommodate up to 2000 people. Among the many shrines, pieces of the Cross of the Lord and the Sepulcher of the Savior are kept here. Protected by the state as an object of cultural heritage. Cyril and Methodius Cathedral
The idea of erecting a cathedral in the Industrial District of the city arose back in 1990, and the construction was completed 10 years later. This is one of the largest temples in Samara. Its height is 57 meters, and the bell tower reaches 73 meters. The project is executed in the neoclassical style: snow-white walls, strict forms, five golden domes. The church has a large educational center "Cyrillic", where there is a kindergarten, classes for schoolchildren and a cadet corps.

Sofia Cathedral
Initially, the place for this temple was consecrated in honor of Seraphim of Sarov in 2003. In 2013 it was decided to rename the temple in honor of Sophia, the Wisdom of God. It is located on the hilly bank of the Volga and adorns the Oktyabrskaya Embankment. Due to the difficult terrain, the entrances to the temple are at different levels. The shape is pillar-like, in the form of a rounded 40-meter tower. It is planned to make an observation deck at the top. Construction work is still underway.

Ascension Cathedral
The cathedral, built in the 40s of the XIX century, has long been the cathedral of the Samara and Syzran dioceses. After it was closed in the 30s of the XX century, it was used as a warehouse, causing serious damage. Since 1993, the oldest church in the city has been returned to the diocese. At the moment, the full historical appearance has been restored, regular services are being held, an almshouse is working. The only temple in Samara in the style of classicism.

Church of Peter and Paul
The temple, built in 1865, is protected regionally as a cultural heritage site. Before the war, the temple was closed, but the churches were returned immediately after the war, the decoration was restored with the surviving utensils from the destroyed churches. Today, ancient icons have been preserved here, parishioners believe in the special power of this place: here they find healing from addictions. The architectural look is designed in the classic Russian style.

Temple of Spyridon of Trimifuntsky
This place is famous not only in Samara. The beginning was laid in 2009, when the dilapidated building of the former mud baths was given for the construction of the temple. Today, here, in a landscaped area, there is a large new church, a spacious park area with the Spiridonovsky pond, and a playground. There are two choirs at the temple. Despite its young age, there are many ancient shrines that can heal.

Church of the Nativity of the Virgin
A tall white-stone temple with sky-blue domes is located on Michurin Street in the central part of the city. It was built in 2003 with the active sponsorship of the Samara Aviation Bearings Plant. The painting inside the temple was made by Palekh icon painters. Services are held daily, and there is also a family Sunday school. Students, in addition to classes, arrange holidays, take part in pilgrimage trips.

Church of the Iverskaya Icon
A large ancient temple was built at the end of the 19th century. The building is rectangular and crowned with a large golden dome. The tall red-brick walls are framed with white windows and arches. After it closed in 1929, it housed a club and a shoe factory. The temple was returned to the Orthodox Church in the early 90s. Today, the historical appearance has been completely restored, a tent-roofed bell tower has been added.

Temple of the Archangel Michael
This temple is associated with the city legend about the visit of John of Kronstadt, who consecrated the place. The construction was completed in 1915, it was the last pre-revolutionary temple in Samara. From 1929 to 1991, the building was transferred to different owners. After its transfer to the Russian Orthodox Church, an active restoration is underway. At present, the interior decoration has been restored, domes have been installed, and a large bell has been hung.

Resurrection Church
The one-altar church at the monastery was built in 1993, but in subsequent years it was completed and expanded. Currently, work continues on the arrangement of the interior decoration. The temple has a five-domed end, the walls of red brick are decorated with openwork trim. The bell tower at the church has a height of 33 meters, the side-chapels are consecrated in honor of Seraphim of Sarov and the Assumption of the Most Holy Theotokos.

Temple of the Cathedral of Samara Saints
The temple was built on the ground sprinkled with the blood of martyrs falsely accused during the Stalin years. Then more than 2.5 thousand people were buried at the place of executions. In 2010, the opening took place. The architectural style belongs to the Moscow Baroque: a three-tiered roof, decorated with 40 kokoshniks, golden domes. The temple is famous for its pure crimson ringing of domes and great acoustics inside. Particles of the relics of the holy great martyrs are kept here.

Temple of St. George the Victorious
A new church in the center of the city was built to replace the old one, destroyed during the Soviet era. Since the construction was timed to coincide with the 2000th anniversary of Christianity and the 55th anniversary of the Great Victory, the site was chosen near the monument to the fallen soldiers. The architectural style is Byzantine classics. The temple is crowned with five domes, faced with white marble, the height is 30 meters, and can accommodate 200 people. An observation deck is arranged in the upper part, from where beautiful views of the Volga open up.

Temple of the icon "Reigning"
In 2003, a place for a new church was laid on Frunze Street, one of the central ones in the city. In 2008, it was opened and consecrated in honor of the Sovereign Icon of the Mother of God, whose face appeared on the day of the tsar's abdication. The white stone five-domed temple is made in the Byzantine style, its height is 26 meters, the tiers of the roof are decorated with kokoshniks. In the evening, the temple is beautifully illuminated.

Temple of St. Sergius of Radonezh
The first stone in the foundation of the temple was laid in 2003. It is located on the territory of the Children's Diocesan Center "Resurrection". Initially, a prayer room was equipped at the center, but it could not accommodate all students and parishioners. In 2012, the first services began, which are now held daily. The church contains parts of the relics of the Monk Martha of Diveevskaya.

Temple of Faith, Hope, Love and their mother Sophia
Built at the end of the 19th century as a small house church at an orphanage, this spiritual center has survived to this day. Today it is protected as a cultural heritage site at the regional level. Temple of the prophet Elijah
In the Kuibyshevsky district there is an Orthodox parish, consecrated in the name of the prophet Elijah, in memory of the ancient temple destroyed in Soviet times. Previously, there was a cinema here, the abandoned building was transferred to the church in the 90s. In 2000, the first divine service took place, and the work was completed by 2002. Holy Cross Church
The temple is located in the Industrial District of the city; it was equipped in an empty kindergarten building in 1999. Today, under one roof there is a church, a Sunday school, a bakery, a library, a church shop, and the editorial office of an Orthodox newspaper. Daily services are held. Temple of Xenia of Petersburg
The first prayer service in this church took place in 2007, on the day of memory of Blessed Xenia of Petersburg. On the same day, a dome and a cross were installed. Before the construction of the temple, the building of the former kindergarten was empty for a long time, it was abandoned. Currently, construction, finishing and landscaping work is underway, fundraising is underway. The temple is located in the railway area.

Church of Boris and Gleb
A white-stone church stands in Victory Park in the Soviet district of the city. White stone walls are crowned with two golden domes. It is symbolic that there is a monument to concentration camp prisoners nearby. Saints Boris and Gleb were the first Russian saints, they were numbered among the martyrs-martyrs. Temple of the Icon "Tenderness"

All Saints Temple
In 1931, the Church of All Saints was blown up in Samara, and a new one was erected in memory of it, near the city cemetery. Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin
The opening of the new temple took place in 2013, it was built in just a year. For the construction, a place was chosen on an elevated part, so the five golden domes of the temple are far visible from any point in the vicinity. It has become a real decoration of the city, the walls are decorated with arches and decor in the traditional Russian style. The interior of the temple is also rich: marble decoration, beautiful wall paintings. Daily services are held.

Alexander Nevsky Church
For a long time there was no Orthodox parish in the suburban village of Zubchaninovka, since in the 30s the Alexander Nevsky temple was dismantled here. Not far from this place, new construction began in 1997, which lasted 4 years. The one-domed church in the Russian style has become a real decoration of the village. Particles of the relics of the holy prince Alexander Nevsky and the holy righteous Peter of Chagrinsky are kept here.

Church of John the Baptist
On this site in 1867, a bishop's skete was built. Then it was only the outskirts of the city. In Soviet times, the skete was lost. Later, during the construction of a new microdistrict, the building of the former refectory was discovered. They saved it and decided to restore and build a temple here. Church of the Matrona of Moscow
The temple was opened in 2014, it was equipped at the children's Orthodox educational center. For these needs, an abandoned building was given, which had been empty for many years. The architecture of the temple, consecrated in honor of the holy great martyr, fancifully combines the details of the Soviet-built facade with new annexes and elements of Orthodox architecture: attic, turrets, stained-glass windows and golden chapters. The temple for 250 people began regular services since 2001. Its construction became the basis of the future large Orthodox complex. Now, in addition to the small church, a utility building with a Sunday school has been built. Temple of Peter and Fevronia
The images of the saints Prince Peter and Princess Fevronia are an example for a prosperous Orthodox family, marital fidelity and love. The Sretenskaya Church was founded in 2012 in the new Krutye Klyuchi microdistrict. The construction was completed in 3 years, but finishing and landscaping continues. Temple of the Life-Giving Source Icon
The large single-altar temple has been under construction since 2014 on Aerodromnaya street, in the park. The main construction work has already been completed, and the territory around the temple has been improved. The project was carried out by Samara architects in the traditional Russian style. The bright walls of the temple are decorated with white arches. The cross-shaped building is crowned with one large gilded dome.

Temple of Mitrofan Voronezh
It was decided to build a church in honor of the holy elder on the high Volga bank, on the descent to the river from Schmidt Street. The project was chosen in a wooden design, in order to harmonize with the surrounding landscape. The construction was completed in 2012. A chopped wooden church with five domes is crowned with a high hipped belfry. The parishioners note that the cozy atmosphere inside and the impressive landscape outside always give an inexhaustible charge of strength.

Church of the Assumption of the Mother of God
The ancient Assumption Church of the 19th century in Samara was lost in the Soviet years. It was originally a wooden building. Therefore, in the early 2000s, it was decided to build a new log church in the Druzhba park in memory of what was lost. The structure is cross-domed, the church looks like a fairytale tower. There is a basement floor, which will house the lower church and the Sunday school.

Temple of the Royal Martyrs
It was decided to equip the temple, consecrated in honor of the deceased royal family, in 2001, a year after the canonization of the royal passion-bearers. For this, an empty building built in 1935 on Bobruiskaya Street was allocated. There is another temple of the Royal Martyrs in the city, in the neighboring Oktyabrsky district.
